Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Charity International (SCI) stated in its report on the occasion of the World White Cane Day, which falls on October 15 of each year, that it has helped 13,000 cases of people suffering from blindness and eye diseases in a number of countries covered by the SCI''s work and projects, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, state embassies, and the SCI’s regional offices.
During the period from 2007 until the end of September of this year, the SCI’s campaigns included conducting initial examinations and surgical operations for cases that required surgical intervention.

The SCI said in its report, “Thanks to the support and donations of kind-hearted people to the anti-blindness campaigns that the SCI conducts continuously to treat eye patients in the regions and countries covered by the SCI’s projects, examinations and surgical operations have been carried out for 13,000 cases of eye patients in Nepal, Bangladesh, Egypt, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Niger, Burundi and Congo, in addition to Sudan, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Bosnia, Benin, Cameroon and Zimbabwe."

The campaigns conduct initial examinations and then provide appropriate treatment, whether by subjecting the sick case to operations or dispensing appropriate medications.

In this regard, Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairman of the SCI’s Board of Directors, said that the project to combat blindness is one of the most advanced humanitarian projects in helping those who are unable to afford the cost of their treatment and vision surgeries.

He added that the Anti-Blindness Campaigns Project is one of the projects that saw the light of day early, and during the year 2007, 370 surgical operations were performed for the blind and those with general visual impairment. The past year 2022 witnessed the launch of several campaigns that contributed to the treatment of 1,889 medical cases. While 70 operations were carried out from the beginning of this year until mid-October, which embodies the importance and humanity of the project in supporting the poor and low-income people who were unable to provide the expenses for these operations.

The SCI, with the support of its donors, supported and assisted patients in obtaining treatment, undergoing examination and surgery, and regaining sight and light to their eyelids, appreciating the size of the active contribution by philanthropists in the success of this project, and emphasising the delivery of aid to those who deserve it in full, wherever they are, without regard to gender or colour.
