Sharjah 24: In cooperation between the Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD), the World Health Organisations’ Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities, and the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, the SSSSD’ Sahrjah Age-Friendly Programme Executive office is organising a meeting to introduce Arab cities to the Emirate of Sharjah experience as an age-friendly capital.
The Emirate of Sharjah is the only Arab member in the World Health Organisations’ Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities, and its membership dates back to 2016 based on an Emiri decree from the Government of Sharjah.

The meeting will be held next Thursday, at Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park.

Asmaa Al Khudari, Director of Sahrjah Age-Friendly Programme Executive office, said that the meeting aims to expand the scope of participation of Arab cities in joining the Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and communities, to support WHO programmes in light of the Network’s recognition of Sharjah’s unique leadership, which is the ideal model for Arab cities at the regional level, in terms of Sharjah achievements over the years maintaining the required indicator and strategic plans.

Asmaa Al Khudari added that invitations were extended to Arab countries, and representatives from the private and government sectors from the Kingdom of Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and Tunisia to attend the meeting.

Asmaa Al Khudari noted that the meeting is the first Arab-regional forum concerned with the age-friendly cities programme, aiming at introducing Arab countries to Sharjah experience, urging them to join the Network, and following Sharjah as a model.

The meeting will be attended by Dr. Thiago Herrick De Sa, representative of the World Health Organisation and age-friendly environments officer, who will talk about the global age-friendly network; and Dr. Samar Al Feki, WHO regional advisor for health and elderly health promotion.

On the sidelines of the meeting, an introductory exhibition will be held showcasing the services provided to Sharjah elderly.
