Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD), organised the annual forum on protecting children, coinciding with the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, celebrated on June 4 each year.
The forum was held on Monday, at the Sheraton Hotel in Sharjah, with the participation of a group of specialists and officials from different government sectors at the state level.
The forum participants stressed the need to unite efforts of all institutions and departments in different sectors to confront the threats to child safety and security, and work to consolidate the ethical values and social customs that the Emirati and Arabs are proud of.
The forum themed "Protecting Values and Threats to Building the Child's Personality," was attended by Hamdan Al Amiri, Director of the Social Phenomena Analysis Branch at the Ministry of Interior; Dr. Asmaa Al Darmaki, researcher and university professor, Director of the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services branch in Kalba; Youssef Al Shehhi, family mentor; Faisal Mohammed Al Shammari, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Child Protection Association; the educator Salah Al Hosani, a counseling specialist at the Emirates Schools Establishment; and Dr. Sharif Abu Shadi, knowledge consultant in the Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD). The forum was moderated by Dr. Jassim Al Hammadi, Director of Knowledge Management in the Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD).
The speakers discussed the challenges facing society, emphasising the system of societal values importance in building the child’s personality. They also stressed the school’s role in supervising and following up on this aspect, followed by other community institutions, including the Ministry of Education and other institutions that play a role in promoting this value aspect. Participants also discussed the importance of the role of the family as well as the dialogue between children and parents and the need for role models.
The forum also called for the commitment of each institution to play its respective role and work to encourage initiatives, activities and awards to develop policies and regulations that promote values. They also called for the importance of strengthening family relations and facing societal challenges and raising awareness and building capacity to support the Arabic language, and updating religious discourse directed at children that simulates the reality experienced by today's generation.
