Sharjah 24: Under the support of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah (UoS), the UoS starts the new academic year 2022/2023, in which it offers more than 122 academic programmes in various disciplines across 14 colleges, and provides a distinctive, inspirational, creative and supportive environment for its students who are the focal point of the educational process, as part of the UoS’s vision.
The University of Sharjah has conducted various studies to understand the market needs in light of the technological development that the world is witnessing and the increase in the number of disciplines and the emergence of new job opportunities that require specialised skills. As a result, the university offered a number of new programmes including Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Water Desalination Engineering, Bachelor of Cybersecurity Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Informatics, as well as a number of postgraduate programmes namely Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence, Master of Science in Business Analytics, Master of Science in Cybersecurity Engineering, Master of Science in Data Science, Master of Dental Surgery in Orthodontics, in addition to other new accredited academic programmes that the university offers according to its strategic plan.

According to the data of Scopus International, the UoS is the first in the country in sober scientific research in terms of the number of researches published in prestigious scientific journals. In addition, the UoS ranks first in the country in the field of cooperation with prestigious international universities and institutes in various research projects.

The University of Sharjah has developed an innovative teaching and learning model known as “flexible hybrid model”, which was designed based on studies and researches conducted by faculty members and specialised committee at the UoS, under the supervision of the academic Central Committee in the university, which is based on four main pillars: infrastructure development and provision of the latest programmes, management of courses, communication platforms, devices and equipments to facilitate student’s interaction and ensure that they are engaged online and onsite. In addition to updating all policies and regulations necessary for online teaching and learning, redesigning course contents, updating and diversifying teaching methods by offering effective programmes to train faculty members on advanced technological tools and  simulation programmes periodically during the weekdays by specialists from the Institute of Leadership in Higher Education and the IT Technical Support. 

According to the educational outcomes and the collected results of students and faculty members’ satisfaction with the flexibility offered by this system, the UoS continues employ this model at a limited capacity at the university campus according to protocols and policies issued by the university based on the nature of the course teaching content. The university left it to the scientific departments determine a number of lectures, in which students are given the option to attend sessions either on campus or online.

The university have also upgraded and modernised its classrooms and laboratories as well as developed its facilities including new air-conditioned corridors, students forum building, parking lots and sports complexes. This is in line with of the UoS’s readiness strategy to welcome its students this semester, which marks the first time the full return of students to classes at the university campus under normal conditions.

It is noteworthy that the UoS has achieved very high ranking among international universities over the past few years according to the latest global ranking reports. The UoS is a comprehensive academic institution, which is considered a pioneer in scientific research and in using advanced technological tools in the teaching and learning process to prepare graduates, researchers and scholars in various scientific fields and enhance their skills to contribute to the development of the society.

In addition, the University of Sharjah received the “Highest Degree of Confidence” rating from the Ministry of Education by the Commission for Academic Accreditation, in appreciation of its efforts in applying quality standards and academic accreditation in all areas of education, scientific research, infrastructure, support services, financial support, and student activities with the existence of a comprehensive system for institutional effectiveness and quality assurance at the UoS, which ensures the effectiveness of all programmes and activities, and assures the achievement of the vision and mission of the university.

At the academic level, the UoS ranks among the top “440” universities in the world according to the Times Higher Education World University Ranking (2022), and is among the 100 most powerful young universities in the world under the age of 50. In addition, it advanced to rank 109 internationally among universities of countries considered as emerging economies according to “The Emerging Economies University Rankings”.
