Sharjah 24: Sharjah Girl Guides (SGG) organised a series of activities in conjunction with the UAE Afforestation Week as part of the 'Pick and Grow' initiative.
This comes in order to promote environmental conservation and emphasise the importance of increasing green spaces to improve ecological sustainability among the girl guides through planting houseplants, the most important of which is the "Aloe Vera plant."

The goal of the initiative is to enhance the involvement and interaction of girl guides in the afforestation week, to raise their environmental awareness, to instil a sense of civic duty, and to inspire them to do their part to protect and preserve environment.

More than 210 seeds of fast-growing plants such berries, olives, basil, tomatoes, and coriander were handed by SGG for planting at the SGG's headquarters and the girls' houses.

With the help of the Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority, SGG has shared information on the Emirate of Sharjah's natural reserves through social media, highlighting the importance they play in protecting ecosystems and animal diversity. In these messages, SGG encouraged individuals to come to its premises to get seeds and seedlings for their own houseplants.

SGG collaborated with the Wadi Dafta Plantation to hold the “Harvest" workshop, for 30 guide girls, in which they learned about seasonal fruits, fresh vegetables, and helpful leaves.

As the director of the Sharjah Girl Guides, Sheikha Al Shamsi explains, "SGG is eager to participate in the Afforestation Week every year, based on its importance in strengthening community partnership to preserve the quality of the environment and the sustainability of agriculture in the country and enhance agricultural productivity, by raising the awareness of guide girls of sustainable environmental practices and encouraging them to participate in environmental activities."

Through celebrating the afforestation week, Al Shamsi highlighted that the UAE is interested in increasing green space by supporting agriculture and protecting flora.
