Sharjah24: Sharjah Girl Guides (SGG) is successfully delivering on its goals of empowering and raising capable generations of young female leaders in the UAE as several members have demonstrated their effective leadership, communication, and team-building skills by headlining a series of educational workshops aimed at upskilling Brownies, Guides and Senior Guides, held in January and February this year.
Senior Guide Batoul Kifah Al-Tamimi led the ‘Merge Art’ workshop for Guides (11 – 14 years) where the young girls learnt the art of merging two images to create a single work of art. At the fun and interactive session, the workshop leader skillfully enhanced participants’ knowledge of a widely applied art form, helped stimulate creativity, and gave them a chance to preserve beautiful memories in a creative manner. Guides received an Art badge for their participation.

Senior Guide Maha Hussein led an interactive origami session for Brownies titled ‘Bringing Paper to Life’ that encouraged out-of-the-box thinking and empowered participants to improve their artistic expressions and spatial visualisation skills through a hands-on learning approach.

In ‘My Special Identity’, Senior Guide Alya Duaifes led her peers on a journey of self-discovery through the world of digital graphic design. With a goal to unlock clues to one’s identity, participants were encouraged to design a logo bearing their name to reflect their unique personalities.

SGG’s efforts in emboldening and raising the aspirations and confidence of its young members was ably demonstrated by Guide Hoor Al Khayal and Brownie Nour Al Khayal who led the ‘Maze Box’ session for Brownies (7 – 10 years). The workshop harnessed the imagination and creative skills of the young participants by encouraging them to reuse commonly found household materials to craft new objects. A fun challenge for all family members, the session was also designed to encourage participants become more observant of their surrounding environment. Participants were awarded Green World badges for their efforts.

At the ‘Kashta’ workshop conducted in collaboration with the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), Brownies embarked on an environmental awareness journey as they learnt ways to care for and preserve the desert environment when going on trips while Senior Guide Hamda Al Marz brought in a fun element to the session with step-by-step instructions on preparing delicious recipes to pack for these desert trips.

Range of educational and upskilling workshops
In other exciting workshops held in January and February, SGG members of all age groups nurtured their creative talents, capabilities, and skillsets in diverse disciplines.

Two photography workshops have set the foundation for developing the creative vision of budding visual artists this year. The ‘Food photography’ workshop imparted valuable skills in lighting techniques and the use of space and subjects while ‘Photography in Education’ challenged participants to hone their skills using different equipment and lighting and invited them to submit entries for a photography contest.

The ‘New Year, New Me!’ workshop targeting Senior Guides (15 – 18 years) aimed at developing a clear vision and focused on kickstarting the year with motivation and commitment to defining and achieving goals while both ‘‘Reading Journey’ and ‘Coffee & A Book’ aimed at nurturing a culture of reading through book discussions, creative writing workshops and a challenge to read 100 books in 2022.

SGG members were inspired to take action for a better world on ‘World Thinking Day’ with a workshop designed to inculcate importance of gender equality and the environment.

Respect for the environment was the theme for ‘Harvest’, where Guides learnt the art of growing a vegetable garden with easy-to-grow vegetables and explored ways to prepare the soil for planting.
