Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Allay, Director of Traffic and Patrols Department at Sharjah Police (SP), revealed a significant decrease in the index of pedestrian crossing violations in the undesignated places, amounting to 25%, during the period from the beginning of January until the end of July of 2021, compared to the same period in last year.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Allay indicated that the "Give Pedestrians Their Right" campaign, which was launched last July, had an impact on the decline in the index, as pedestrian crossing violations decreased by 38.5%, and traffic accidents resulting from wrong crossing by 17%, compared to July of the year the past.
The Director of the Traffic and Patrols Department said that the reduction in pedestrian crossing violations came thanks to the efforts of the SP, through intensifying awareness programmes and traffic campaigns. In addition to the important role of the various media, which contribute to raising public awareness of the causes of accidents and ways to avoid them, maintaining the safety of road users and reducing the number of traffic accidents. Such efforts embody SP’s vision that is in line with the Ministry of Interior’s strategic goal of making roads safer.
The Director of the Traffic and Patrols Department called on members of the public and road users to adhere to crossing from places designated for pedestrians, in order to preserve the safety of all, and to avoid run-over accidents that claimed many lives because of the wrong crossing.
