Belgian rider Tim Wellens finished third, while his compatriot Florian Vermeersch crossed the line in seventh. The pair consequently occupy third and seventh place respectively in the overall standings.
The opening stage featured five ascents of the cobbled Michaelgate climb, creating a highly competitive race that split the peloton into several groups. Wellens and Vermeersch both remained in the leading group that ultimately contested the stage victory.
The two UAE Team Emirates-XRG riders showed a strong presence during the closing kilometres, taking turns attacking in an attempt to secure the win for their team. Vermeersch launched a powerful attack inside the final two kilometres, opening a 10-second gap over his nearest rivals before British rider Lewis Askey caught him and moved into the lead in the closing metres.
Askey, riding for NSN Cycling, won the stage in 4 hours, 2 minutes and 44 seconds. Filippo Ganna finished two seconds behind, while Tim Wellens took third place on the same time. Vermeersch finished seventh, 11 seconds behind the winner.
The result also strengthened the UAE team's position in the overall standings. Wellens sits third, 11 seconds behind the race leader, while Vermeersch is seventh, 24 seconds off the lead.
