The Sharjah Fish Resources Authority (SFRA) has launched the second edition of its Future Fishermen programme in collaboration with the fishermen’s cooperative societies in the emirate and Sharjah Youth. The initiative aims to introduce young participants to the UAE’s maritime heritage while promoting responsible fishing practices and sustainability.

Promoting maritime heritage among youth

Mariam Abdullah Al Naboodah, Head of the Public Relations Section at the Sharjah Fish Resources Authority, said the second edition of the programme has attracted 75 participants, who will become ambassadors for sharing knowledge and experiences with their peers.

Speaking to “Sharjah 24,” Al Naboodah explained that the 10-day programme begins in Sharjah and concludes in Dibba Al Hisn, and features a range of educational and practical activities. These include visits to Souq Al Jubail and fishermen’s cooperative facilities, as well as a sea trip that allows participants to apply the concepts covered in the programme’s theoretical sessions.

Building awareness of responsible fishing

Al Naboodah added that the programme introduces children to the UAE’s maritime heritage, enhances their understanding of responsible fishing and sustainability, and strengthens their connection to the traditions of the sea.

“The initiative also encourages participants to share their knowledge with their peers to preserve and promote the UAE's maritime legacy for the future generations,” she added.
