Sharjah 24: South Africa reached the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in their fourth appearance, defeating brotherly South Korea 1-0 at Monterrey Stadium in Mexico in the third and final round of Group A matches at the 2026 tournament.

South Africa will face Canada in the round of 32 in Los Angeles on 28 June.

The South Africans secured the vital victory thanks to Thapelo Maseko, who scored the only goal of the match in the 63rd minute.

Belgian coach Hugo Broos’ side finished second in the group with four points, behind Mexico, who topped the standings with a perfect nine points after a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic.

Brotherly South Korea ended the group stage in third place with three points, while the Czech Republic were eliminated after finishing bottom with a single point.
