Sharjah 24: Uncertainty continued to surround Brazilian star Neymar and his calf injury on Wednesday, the opening day of Brazil’s training camp ahead of the 2026 World Cup, as the Seleção bid to win a sixth world title, 24 years after their last triumph.

The former Barcelona forward, along with the rest of the Brazil squad, arrived by helicopter at the Granja Comary training centre in Teresópolis, near Rio de Janeiro.

Ancelotti still awaiting Champions League finalists

The Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed that all players expected on Wednesday had reported to camp. Only three of the 26 players selected by Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti remain in Europe ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final in Budapest between reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal.

Those players are Marquinhos of PSG, and Gabriel Magalhães and Gabriel Martinelli of Arsenal.

Neymar to undergo medical assessment

Neymar joined the national team camp after missing Santos’ recent matches because of the calf injury.

Like the rest of the squad, he is scheduled to undergo medical examinations starting on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old striker, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer and a member of the nation’s five-time World Cup-winning side, has not played for the Seleção since suffering a serious knee injury in October 2023.

As a result, “Ney” remains doubtful for Sunday’s friendly against Panama, when Brazil will bid farewell to their supporters at the Maracanã Stadium before travelling to the United States.

Brazil to face Egypt before World Cup opener

Brazil will play another friendly on 6 June against Egypt in Cleveland, before opening their World Cup campaign five days later against Morocco.

They will then face Haiti on 19 June and Scotland on 24 June in Group C.
