Authorities stated that the collision took place between the towns of Svaty Jur and Pezinok, around 20 kilometres north of the capital, Bratislava. Approximately 800 passengers were on the two trains when the accident occurred.
Slovakia’s Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok, speaking from the crash site, confirmed that most of the injured suffered minor wounds, while 11 passengers were transported to hospitals in Bratislava for further treatment. Emergency teams, firefighters, and police units were immediately dispatched to the scene to assist in rescue operations and provide medical aid.
The minister commended the rapid response of first responders, noting that most passengers were safely evacuated within hours of the collision. Authorities have initiated an investigation to establish the cause of the accident.
Officials identified the trains as the Tatran Express, which operates between Kosice and Bratislava, and a regional express train travelling between Nitra and the capital. Both services are operated by Slovakia’s national railway company.
Early reports indicate that one train might have been stationary or decelerating when the other collided into it from behind, but investigators have yet to verify the sequence of events.
