Zelensky to visit Spain 'soon'

"We can confirm that a visit will take place soon but for security reasons, we cannot disclose the date," a source told AFP.

This would mark Zelensky's second trip to Spain since Russia's 2022 war with Ukraine, following a first in May 2024.

Spanish radio station Cadena SER reported Thursday that authorities expected the trip to take place "in about two weeks".

Zelensky is expected to meet Sanchez during his trip and to visit Madrid's Reina Sofia Museum, which is home to Pablo Picasso's anti-war masterpiece "Guernica", according to Cadena SER.

When contacted by AFP, sources from the office of the Spanish leader said Madrid and Kyiv are "currently working on the programme".

In 2022, Zelensky compared Russia's devastating assault on his country to the Nazis' 1937 bombing of the northern Spanish town of Guernica in an address to Spain's parliament.

Zelensky has repeatedly called for backing from European leaders, with tension high as the war in Ukraine drags through its fourth year.
