Sharjah 24 – WAM: The United States has granted Hungary a one-year exemption from US sanctions on the use of Russian oil and gas, a White House official announced on Friday. The decision came after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met with President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss the matter.

Orban highlights importance for Hungary

Prime Minister Orban emphasised that continued access to Russian energy supplies is crucial for Hungary’s economy and citizens. He noted that the country’s lack of access to seaports limits its ability to diversify energy imports.

Trump acknowledges Hungary’s geographic constraints

President Trump acknowledged Hungary’s energy challenges, pointing out that, unlike other nations, Hungary does not have direct access to the sea or major ports, which complicates alternative supply routes.

Hungary to purchase US liquefied natural gas

Alongside the sanctions exemption, Hungary has agreed to purchase US liquefied natural gas worth approximately $600 million, as part of efforts to diversify its energy sources while maintaining economic stability.
