After a disastrous start with six straight matches without a win, Villa had recovered with five consecutive victories, including a Premier League win over Europa League champions Tottenham, but they squandered their lead against the Dutch hosts. A penalty near the end failed to secure a draw, marking their first defeat after wins over Bologna and Feyenoord.
Under Spanish coach Unai Emery, a four-time Europa League winner, Villa took the lead in the fourth minute through Ivorian Ivan Ĝisan from a Jadon Sancho cross. Despite several chances in the first half, Villa conceded an equaliser in the 42nd minute when Belgian Mats Suray broke the offside trap and scored.
The home side regained the lead early in the second half through Mats Daile (61). Villa missed a golden opportunity to equalise from a penalty ten minutes from time as Emiliano Buendía shot over the bar (79), leaving the score at 2-1 and giving Go Ahead Eagles their second win and six points.
In France, Lyon overcame recent defeats to Toulouse (1-2) and Nice (2-3) to beat Swiss side Basel 2-0, with goals from Corentin Tolisso and substitute Afonso Moreira, assisted by Mathis de Carvalho and Pavel Šulc.
