Sharjah chess club crowns winners of first sports council event

Sharjah24: Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Cultural Chess Club and President of the Arab Chess Federation, crowned the winners of the first edition of the Sharjah Sports Council Blitz and Rapid Chess Championship.

The two-day event was hosted by the club under the patronage of the Sharjah Sports Council. A total of 150 male and female players from across the emirate’s clubs took part.

The closing ceremony was attended by Issa Hilal Al Hazami, Chairman of the Sharjah Sports Council, Dr Taryam Matar Taryam, President of the UAE Chess Federation, Imran Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Vice Chairman of the club, along with board members, coaches and administrators.

Results

In the individual competition, Rashid Hussain Al Hammadi of Sharjah Cultural Chess Club secured first place with 10 points from 11 rounds, tying with his teammate Sultan Jaber Al Zarouni, who took silver. Their fellow clubmate, Ahmed Ali Bamtaraf, came third with nine points to claim bronze.

Fourth place went to Kalba player Salem Jassim with 8.5 points, tying with his teammate Ahmed Khalifa Al Budwawi. Winners of the team competition, held on the opening day, were also honoured.

Championship impact

Sheikh Khalid expressed his happiness with the strong turnout for a championship bearing the name of the Sharjah Sports Council, which supports all sports in the emirate. He thanked the council, chaired by Issa Hilal Al Hazami, noting that the large participation reflects the wide player base and the talents nurtured in the emirate.

He added that hosting the championship reinforces unity among all the emirate’s clubs under a shared vision, aligning with the club’s strategy to organise events, spread the game, and support talent development.

Looking ahead

Sheikh Khalid stressed that the inaugural edition had achieved its objectives. He confirmed that future editions would be further developed to serve both the clubs and the game, providing vital opportunities for the coming generations who represent the future of chess.
