Sharjah24: The 18th World Congress themed "We Are Inclusion," held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, commenced on September 15 and will continue until September 17. Organised by the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) in strategic partnership with Inclusion International, this significant event has drawn participants from various countries, including Mary Wickenden, a noted disability researcher from the Institute of Development Studies in the United Kingdom, to engage in discussions about the pressing issues facing individuals with disabilities.

Wickenden highlighted the importance of participatory research, which involves engaging with people with disabilities to explore their lives and challenges. "We focus on what individuals with disabilities want, their concerns, and the changes they seek," she stated. This research approach prioritizes social engagement over traditional lab methods, ensuring that the voices of those often overlooked, particularly individuals with intellectual disabilities, are heard.

Wickenden emphasized the necessity of adapting research methods to include all types of disabilities, dispelling the misconception that individuals with intellectual disabilities are unable to participate meaningfully. "If done correctly, research can empower individuals to express their needs and desires," she noted. This inclusive approach fosters a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and informs organizations and service providers about how to better meet their needs.

As the congress progresses, it reinforces a collective commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment. The discussions serve as a reminder that ensuring access to education for all children, regardless of their abilities, is a shared responsibility. By addressing challenges and embracing innovative solutions, the global community can work toward a future where every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive.
