Nick Garnett: Ideas matter more than apps in mobile journalism

Sharjah 24: On the events of the second day of International Government Communication Forum (IGCF) 2025, organised by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB) on September 10–11 at Expo Centre Sharjah under the theme “Communication for Quality of Life”, Nick Garnett, a mobile journalism expert and trainer, shared his perspective on the apps and tools that are reshaping the media industry.

Garnett highlighted how mobile journalism can transform not just broadcasting but also social media and content creation. “The phone is no longer just a device for consuming content — with the right apps it becomes a powerful tool for creating it” he said.

He explained how journalists can broadcast live to global audiences with minimal equipment.

Yet Garnett was keen to stress that technology alone is not enough. “On top of all the apps, the real difference comes from ideas. I’m a strong believer in the power of individuals to be better than AI, better than any app. What really matters is what we say, how we say it, and the way we put that message across”.

His insights reinforced a core message of IGCF 2025, while digital tools and platforms open new possibilities, creativity and human communication remain at the heart of impactful storytelling.
