Sharjah 24: With support from the Arab Theatre Institute and in cooperation with the National Theatre of Derna, a theatre training course titled "Theatrical Performance - From Script to Performance" was organised. The course began in Derna on August 1, 2025, and will continue until its conclusion. The course will result in a theatrical production to apply all the aspects of the course.

The Arab Theatre Institute assigned Algerian theatre artist Haroun Al Kilani as the main facilitator for the course. He will provide training to trainees in the arts of performance, idea development and improvisation, script writing, and visual, auditory, and kinetic theatrical scene construction, leading up to the performance.

The institute also assigned artist Ghanem Ghanem, Director of Training and Qualification, as a visiting facilitator. He will work on the issues of theatrical writing, its arts, and its tools, helping the team fine-tune the dramaturgy of the script they have created.

Drowning on land

“Drowning on Land” is the show resulting from this course, which involved six hours of daily training over 30 days.

Al Kilani conducted early tests for the show, performing his theatrical rehearsals in various city squares in the presence of an audience. These tests benefited the performer, the facilitator, and the theatrical troupe alike. The official performance will take place at the end of this month at the National Theatre in Derna.

Al Kilani expressed his pride in the trust the institute placed in him to facilitate the course. He expressed his enthusiasm and appreciation for the spirit shown by Derna's theatre professionals, both artists and administrators, in their interest and care, and in providing all means to ensure the course's success and achieve its goals.

Al Kilani pointed out that different generations of theatre professionals from Derna and neighbouring regions are standing side by side in this course, a sign of utmost importance for the present and future of theatre in Derna, as peers are the safety valve for development and continuity.

Reviving Derna theatre

Artist Naji Abdul Latif, Director of the National Theatre of Derna, stated that the revival of theatre in Derna at this time is an indicator of the health and will of the people of Derna to recover after the disaster that struck the city less than a year ago when Hurricane Daniel struck and destroyed it, claiming tens of thousands of lives in less than an hour.

Naji added that the Arab Theatre Institute's cooperation with the National Theatre is extremely important and vital, and praised Algerian trainer Al Kilani for his tremendous training efforts.

Solidarity

Secretary-General of the Arab Theatre Institute, Ismail Abdullah, speaking about the course, emphasised that the Arab Theatre Institute has not and will not hesitate to stand with theatre professionals across the Arab world. This is what His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi established it for, and this is what Arab theatre professionals pledge to. Therefore, the training programme and the selection of trainers were designed to achieve.

The Secretary-General congratulated Derna's theatre professionals on their will to live and recover.
