Sharjah 24 – WAM: The UAE participated in the Third Marrakesh Economic Parliamentary Forum, organised by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) and hosted by the House of Councillors of the Kingdom of Morocco. Held under the theme “Unprecedented Economic, Trade and Energy Challenges – The Response of Regional Parliaments and the Private Sector,” the forum convened high-level parliamentary representatives, government officials, and private sector stakeholders from the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions.

Focus on AI governance and parliamentary awareness

Amna Ali AlAdidi, member of the Federal National Council (FNC) Parliamentary Division, took part in a key session titled “Artificial Intelligence and its Governance: Strengthening Parliamentary Awareness in AI Development, Applications and Regulation.” The session tackled the governance of emerging technologies, proposed the idea of an international AI treaty, assessed AI’s impact on labour markets and ethics, and discussed establishing a regional advisory body to enhance coordination and responsible innovation.

Emphasis on legal frameworks and public awareness

During her remarks, AlAdidi stressed the importance of organising dialogue sessions and parliamentary seminars to better explain AI concepts to legislators. She highlighted the need for legal frameworks that ensure AI’s safe and responsible use, while calling for partnerships with educational and media institutions to launch public awareness campaigns about the implications of AI.

UAE’s AI initiatives and vision for the future

AlAdidi also showcased the UAE’s strategic initiatives in developing AI technologies, viewing them as a key component in advancing a knowledge-based economy. Notably, she pointed out that the UAE is the first country in the Middle East to mandate AI integration into the national curriculum, starting from the 2025–2026 academic year.

This policy is part of a national vision to equip future generations with the tools needed for sustainable development, innovation, and global competitiveness in the years ahead.
