Sharjah 24 – WAM: Saeed Rashid Al Abdi, a member of the Federal National Council (FNC), represented the UAE at the 4th Marrakesh Parliamentary Economic Forum for the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Region, hosted by the House of Councillors of the Kingdom of Morocco.

Warning over decline in free trade

Speaking during a session titled “Global Challenges to Economic Integration, Free Trade and Public Debt,” Al Abdi warned that free trade is facing a clear decline due to rising protectionist policies, new customs tariffs and the use of economic tools for political leverage. He also pointed to regional tensions and disruptions to maritime shipping routes, which have increased transportation, energy and insurance costs and weakened global trade and investment flows.

UAE highlights trade model and call for stability

Al Abdi said the main barrier to economic integration is no longer a lack of agreements, but a growing erosion of trust and stability as countries prioritise domestic markets over global openness. He reaffirmed that free trade remains a cornerstone of sustainable regional integration and highlighted the UAE’s economy as a leading model, noting that foreign trade reached around AED 3.8 trillion in 2025. He stressed that safeguarding maritime security and regional stability is essential for protecting supply chains and ensuring sustainable development.
