Weaning race returns to Al Dhaid under royal patronage

Sharjah 24: The "Fatameen" (Weanling) age group camel race, resumed on Saturday, May 10, at Al Dhaid Arabian Camel Racecourse with the presence of His Excellency Abdullah Mohammed Muadh bin Huwaiden Al Ketbi, Chairman of the Sharjah Camel Racing Club.

Under the patronage of Sharjah’s Ruler

The race is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. It is part of a broader effort to preserve and promote the Emirati heritage through traditional sports.

Race format and participation

The competition featured 16 races, each covering a distance of 1500 meters. The lineup included eight rounds for female Al Dhaid camels, two challenging rounds for Al Dhaid camels, and six open rounds.

Results from female rounds

Top finishes in the female rounds included Al Wariyah for Saif Khalifa bin Nouma Al Ketbi, Ghara for Salem Humaid Mohammed Al Shamsi, and multiple wins by camels named Shaheen, representing various owners

Highlights from open and challenging rounds

In the open category, the standout was Shadeed, owned by Abdullah Obaid bin Daghmail Al Jadili, who achieved the best time of two minutes nineteen seconds and nine milliseconds
In the more challenging rounds, Thamina and another Shaheen, both representing Sultan Saif Ali Ejtabi, secured victories

Preserving heritage through sport

The event reflects ongoing efforts to support camel owners and uphold the cultural legacy of camel racing in the UAE, a tradition deeply rooted in the nation’s history
