IDC explores innovative tools to address shifts in markets 2

Sharjah24: The global book distribution sector is reevaluating its tools and strategies in light of challenges like supply chain disruptions, changing readers' behaviours, and transitioning to digital platforms. A series of professional workshops at the International Distributors Conference (IDC) focused on this topic, where representatives from publishing and distribution companies across 92 countries exchanged insights and examined practical solutions to improve performance, build partnerships, engage readers, and increase operational efficiency.

Data-driven solutions

Ajay Mago, from India, emphasised the impact of artificial intelligence on enhanced sales and discovery in libraries, while Fernando Pascal presented effective data management solutions for book retailers. Kristine Pikenena from Latvia discussed her experience with Instagram and book bloggers to enhance reach and engagement.

Improving sales and building connections

The workshops focused on effective daily practices for book retailers. Jeremy Cammy from Canada explored the art of manual sales, while Sarah McLean from Bloomsbury in the United Kingdom shared insights on enhancing distributor–publisher relationships. Philippe Hunziker from Guatemala concentrated on essential management skills for library directors.

Creating reading communities

Yusuf Bassim, from Iraq, illustrated the potential for libraries to become lasting allies in the distribution chain, while Ihab Abu Zaid, from Egypt, examined the application of artificial intelligence in analysing sales data. Basma Karim from Tunisia explored ways in which social media platforms can enhance book distribution and drive sales growth.

Institutional identity and publishing approaches

Khaled Mohammed Al-Otaibi, from Saudi Arabia, emphasised the significance of having a robust visual identity in the publishing industry. Ayman Howera from Australia provided valuable insights on how to maintain an effective and flexible distribution policy, while Harriet Vocking from the United Kingdom shared practical steps for creating a sustainable e-commerce project that delivers genuine value.

Sustainability within the distribution sector

Delegates from Spain and Italy concentrated on fostering a sustainable reading community. Rodrigo Larrubia shared his knowledge in creating and overseeing book clubs, while Elena Martínez Blanco explored strategies to promote reading among children and teenagers through libraries.

Maddalena from Italy highlighted the cultural significance of literary festivals. Furthermore, Eskander Jabes from Tunisia discussed the future of libraries in the 21st century, while Rome Quezada from the United States examined how coffee table books can aid in building reading communities. Saeed Shaban led a session to wrap up the workshops, highlighting sustainability as a crucial principle for advancing the distribution sector.
