Brigadier General Omar Al Ghazal Al Shamsi, who leads the team focused on monitoring begging and street vendors, highlighted that begging is a serious issue that affects both safety and community well-being. He explained that those who beg often take advantage of people’s kindness to make quick money.
After the police received a report from someone in the community, they quickly arrived at the scene and found that the man was living in the country illegally. During their investigation, they learned he had amassed a significant amount of money in a short time.
To tackle this issue, Sharjah Police have launched an awareness campaign called "Begging is a Crime, Giving is a Responsibility." This initiative began at the start of Ramadan and aims to educate the public while increasing police patrols to catch those who beg and illegally sell goods. Some people have even turned begging into a way to make money specifically during this holy month.
The police urge the community not to give money to beggars and instead report any instances of begging by calling their toll-free number or the call center.
