Hamas suggested a unique agreement in which they would release 21-year-old soldier Edan Alexander, who was captured during Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack, along with the bodies of four other Israeli-American hostages. In exchange, Israel would free Palestinian prisoners, with the number still under negotiation.
Hamas also called for the immediate opening of all border crossings to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Philadelphi corridor. These actions are contingent on the implementation of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, which they propose should be negotiated within 50 days.
Israel rejected the proposal, with the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accusing Hamas of manipulation and psychological warfare. Netanyahu's office is set to meet with ministers to discuss the next steps in the negotiations and the release of hostages.
The White House criticised Hamas for making "entirely impractical" demands, asserting that they are making a "very bad bet" by assuming time is on their side.
During the initial phase of the truce, which began in January, 33 hostages were released in exchange for approximately 1,800 Palestinian prisoners. However, 58 hostages remain in Gaza, 34 of whom have been declared dead by the Israeli army.
