Sharjah 24 – AFP: SOS Mediterranee, a French migrant rescue organisation, rescued 25 individuals stranded off the Libyan coast on Sunday. The operation took place aboard the Ocean Viking vessel, where the rescued people, including three women and seven minors, are being cared for by the Red Cross and SOS Mediterranee teams.

Details of the rescue

Among the rescued, five minors are unaccompanied, and two of the children are under four years old. The boat was located after an alert was issued by Alarm Phone, a service for migrants in distress during the dangerous Mediterranean crossing in search of a better life in Europe.

The rising toll of Mediterranean migration

Since the beginning of 2025, 247 people have either disappeared or died in the Mediterranean, adding to the 2,360 deaths recorded in 2024. The central Mediterranean route remains one of the deadliest paths for migrants attempting to reach Europe.
