The Holy Quran and its relation to psychological well-being
Sheikh Dr Aziz bin Farhan Al-Enezi began his lecture by emphasising that Allah created mankind and entrusted them with this world for a great purpose. He explained that life is a test and a trial, as stated in the verse, “Indeed, we have created man into hardship.” He pointed out that this reality applies to everyone, including prophets who also faced hardships and trials, as highlighted in the verse: “O mankind, indeed, you are labouring towards your Lord with great exertion.” Every person strives, faces challenges, and encounters crises.
Dr Al-Enezi stressed that this worldly life is not eternal but rather a place of tests and trials, as Allah says, “And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.” He explained that trials manifest in various forms, such as illnesses, loss of loved ones, wealth, and health, requiring believers to exercise patience and trust in Allah.
Seeking happiness in life
Dr Al-Enezi affirmed that humanity collectively seeks happiness and tranquillity, but true happiness is only achieved through contentment with Allah’s decree and turning to Him in all circumstances. He cited the example of the slander against the Mother of the Believers, Lady Aisha, and her vindication by Allah, may Allah be pleased with her, and how she remained patient until relief came from Allah in the verse: “Indeed, those who brought forth falsehood are a group among you.” This incident highlights the importance of patience and reliance on Allah in overcoming psychological distress.
He noted that people go through emotional and psychological struggles, such as depression and grief. However, the Holy Quran provides solutions for those experiencing distress or crises, asserting that turning to Allah through supplication and worship is the path to relief. He referenced the supplication of Prophet Yunus (Jonah), peace be upon him, when he called out in the darkness: “There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been one of the wrongdoers.” Allah then relieved him of his hardship.
The importance of balance and psychological stability
Dr Al-Enezi highlighted the significance of achieving psychological balance in a Muslim’s life, stressing the need for emotional regulation so that a person is not controlled by external events and circumstances. He emphasised that a believer keeps the world in their hands, not their hearts, as they work for the hereafter while acknowledging that this worldly life is fleeting. He referenced the verse: “Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he were to die or be killed…”
Psychological well-being in light of the Holy Quran
Dr Al-Enezi asserted that one of the key factors in enhancing psychological well-being is acknowledging one’s dependence on Allah and constantly seeking Him through supplication and repentance. He cited the verse: “And when My worshippers ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.”
He also pointed out that the Quran instructs people to use their intellect and reflect upon the world rather than being absorbed in pleasures without awareness. This life is not eternal; people will either be companions in Paradise or partners in Hell, depending on their deeds and actions.
At the conclusion of the lecture, Sheikh Al-Enezi urged the attendees to adhere to the teachings of the Holy Quran in all aspects of their lives, particularly in facing psychological challenges and trials. He highlighted the Quran’s impact on calming the soul and guiding individuals towards true tranquillity.
The audience praised the lecture for its profound spiritual insights that contribute to raising awareness of psychological well-being through the teachings of Islam. They also commended the significance of such religious gatherings in illuminating their lives and guiding them to face life’s difficulties with faith and certainty.
