Sharjah24: The second day of the 13th Sharjah International Athletics Forum for the Disabled proceeded with vigorous competitions at Al Thiqa Club for the Disabled. The event, held from February 2–4, 2025, demonstrated remarkable international participation, emphasising the talents and perseverance of athletes with disabilities. The competitions took place in an intense atmosphere, showcasing the event’s increasing significance on the global sports calendar.
Sheikhs' attendance
Sheikh Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Ruler's Office, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Saqr Al Qasimi attended part of the competitions, along with several government officials.
The event focused not only on sporting excellence but also featured community activities aimed at promoting inclusivity and highlighting the creative talents of individuals with disabilities.
Community activities
The activities included complimentary Emirati food stalls, showcases of handmade crafts like furniture and embroidery, and a commemorative board where participants conveyed their appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, for his ongoing support of the club and individuals with disabilities.
Emirati athletes' outstanding performances
The competition demonstrated outstanding performances from Emirati athletes, highlighted by Mohammed Othman of Dubai Club for People of Determination, who secured gold in the 100m wheelchair race (T34).
Yahya Al Balushi and Abdullah Al Marzouqi from Al Thiqa Club each achieved gold in their respective events, with Al Balushi winning the 100m race (T46/47) and Al Marzouqi triumphing in the 100m wheelchair race (T71/72). Furthermore, Farhan Iqbal secured the top position in the 800m (T36/46) category. A number of other UAE athletes secured leading positions in a range of events.
International competitors
International competitors also achieved remarkable results, with Saudi athlete Noor Al Sa’in clinching gold in the 100m race, his compatriot Abdulrahman Al Qurashi earning gold in the 100m wheelchair race, and Tunisian athlete Walid Boutila finishing first in the 800m wheelchair race.
Director’s remarks
Championship Director Yousuf Mohammed Al Doubi emphasised the significance of sports in empowering individuals with disabilities, noting that Al Thiqa Club is committed to enhancing their abilities through competitive sports and community involvement.
He highlighted that these activities contribute to raising awareness about the rights of individuals with disabilities and fostering their creative talents across various domains, such as crafts and the arts. Al Doubi emphasised Sharjah’s dedication to inclusivity and excellence in hosting premier sporting events, pointing out that the championship consistently establishes new records and draws top international athletes each year.
