Sharjah24: In implementation of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to develop pure goat breeding at Al Wusta Livestock Farm project, affiliated with the Sharjah Agriculture and Livestock Production (Ektifa) , the first batch of the nucleus of the goat herd, numbering 370 heads, arrived at Sharjah International Airport, which is the latest project of the Sharjah Sustainable Food Security System, and is unique to the emirate.

His Excellency Dr. Eng. Khalifa Musabah Al Tunaiji, Chairman of (Iktifa), affiliated with the Department of Agriculture and Livestock (SDAL), said that Al Wusta Livestock Farm project, which is the largest in the region and is being implemented under the directives and follow-up of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, aims to preserve and improve local breeds of goats and sheep, conduct scientific studies and research, and train students specialising in this important and vital sector, in addition to producing organic meat, dairy and their derivatives.

Goats were selected according to the highest international standard

Khalifa Al Tunaiji added: "This breed of goats coming from Cyprus is characterised by fertility and high production of twins and meat; it is considered one of the distinguished breeds in breeding programmes, genetic improvement and economic production, and it adapts to the environmental and climatic conditions of the UAE, and it is also resistant to diseases compared to other breeds.

Al Tunaiji explained that the goats were selected according to the highest international standards, by a specialised medical and research team of veterinarians and technicians, who are working on conducting scientific studies and research to develop local goat breeds through conducting vaccination experiments, which contribute to preserving and improving pure and authentic breeds, as well as producing organic meat and dairy. He pointed out that the Sharjah Food Security System adopts the circular economy in all its projects; with the aim of achieving integration between agricultural and animal production using the latest technologies, in line with the nature and needs of these projects.
