Sharjah24: As the sun set over the American University of Sharjah on Saturday evening, Relay for Life 2025, organised by Friends of Cancer Patients, was illuminated by the Luminaria Ceremony, symbolising hope and community. The ceremony, held under the night sky, marked the emotional heart of the event, where the memories of those affected by cancer and the unwavering spirit of survivors were honoured in a poignant display of light, love and resilience.
Participants from all walks of life gathered to dedicate luminarias to their loved ones, each one personalised with messages of remembrance, encouragement, and hope. The glowing tributes represented not only the lives lost but also the strength of those still fighting, symbolising the shared commitment of the community to support each other in the battle against cancer.
The ceremony began with quiet reflection, as each luminaria was lit one by one, casting a soft glow across the track. Messages like “Hope is life,” “You inspire us,” and “Be strong; don’t lose hope” illuminated the night, offering both a tribute to the past and a powerful reminder for the future. These glowing tributes carried profound meaning, reflecting the unity and resilience that define Relay for Life.
Fatima Abdullah, 14, a cancer survivor who discovered a tumour on her knee and underwent chemotherapy, shared her emotional journey. “I didn’t think I’d make it,” she said, “but here I am, lighting a luminaria for everyone still fighting.”
Christopher Claver, 39, from the United States, who was diagnosed with leukaemia at just two years old, also shared his story. “Cancer hasn’t defined me,” he said. “I’m here tonight to show that with love and support, anything is possible.”
Together, Fatima, Christopher, and all those in attendance, including survivors, patients, and family members, joined hands in solidarity and walked around the illuminated track. Each step represented a collective commitment to those battling cancer, to survivors, and to those whose lives were lost.
The Luminaria Ceremony is a hallmark of Relay for Life, embodying the strength of a united community. It stands as a tribute to the ongoing fight against cancer, a reminder that each step taken, every luminaria lit, and every story shared brings hope to those who need it most.
