Sharjah 24: The pediatric surgery team at Al Qassimi Women's and Children's Hospital, affiliated with the Emirates Health Services (EHS), made an exceptional medical achievement in a delicate operation to remove the lower lobe of the left lung of a newborn weighing no more than 4 kilogrammes and suffering from congenital lung defects that hindered his ability to breathe.

Minimally invasive surgery

The operation was performed using a minimally invasive technique that relies on making small holes using a surgical endoscope designed for children without the need to cut the chest, which is a pioneering step in the field of pediatric surgery.

Dr. Khaled Khalfan, Assistant Director of the Medical Affairs, indicated that the operation, which took four hours, was crowned with complete success, as the child left the hospital after three days in excellent health, noting that this achievement reflects the combined efforts of a multidisciplinary team, including anaesthesiologists, radiologist, pediatricians, pediatric intensive care, and surgical nursing specialists, who benefited from the latest technologies and advanced medical equipment available at Al Qassimi Women's and Children's Hospital.

Speaking about the details of the case, Dr. Mohammed Hassan, pediatric surgery consultant at the hospital, explained that the child was suffering from congenital defects in the form of cysts in the lungs that hindered his ability to breathe properly. After closely examining the case and conducting the necessary tests, the medical team decided to remove the damaged lung lobe using an advanced surgical endoscope designed for children, through four small openings in the chest, each no longer than 2 cm.

A challenging surgery

It is worth noting that this type of surgery poses a major challenge, especially for children weighing less than 10 kilogrammes, which makes the success of this operation a pioneering medical achievement that enhances the reputation of the UAE in the health sector and confirms its excellence in providing healthcare according to the highest standards.

This success is attributed to EHS keenness and commitment to enhance the quality of its health services and reach global competitive levels, as part of its strategy aimed at consolidating the UAE’s position as a leading destination in providing distinguished healthcare and applying the latest medical innovations and technologies.
