Sharjah24: The cardiology team at Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah, which is part of the Emirates Health Services (EHS), has reached a notable medical achievement by successfully implanting the advanced biodegradable "Fantom Encore" stent in a 55-year-old patient experiencing chest pain and stable angina. The procedure was completely successful, leading to the patient's release in excellent health.

Experienced leadership guides innovative cardiac care

The hospital's medical team, under the direction of Dr Arif Al Nooryani, Director of Al Qassimi Hospital, and Dr Ahmed Khashaba, Professor of Cardiology and Consultant in Interventional Cardiology, conducted the procedure.

This groundbreaking accomplishment represents a major advancement in the reintroduction of biodegradable stents as a more effective treatment alternative to conventional metal stents, providing enhanced long-term results and maintaining the natural functions of blood vessels.

Enhanced functionalities of "Fantom Encore"

The "Fantom Encore" stents, created by B. Braun with cutting-edge technology, signify the third generation of bioresorbable stents. They provide a variety of distinctive features, such as improved visibility during procedures, straightforward implantation, and a secure design that enables the stent to dissolve naturally following vascular treatment. In contrast to permanent metal stents that stay in the blood vessels, these stents offer notable improvements in cardiac care.

Dr Arif Al Nooryani highlights the innovation

Dr Arif Al Nooryani explained that the "Fantom Encore" stent uses tyrosine amino acids, which enhances its effectiveness and safety for biodegradation. He noted that the stent is straightforward to implant, effective in addressing blood vessel issues, and dissolves naturally, aiding in the preservation of vessel movement and function. He conveyed his enthusiasm for the reintroduction of this technology to the market, stating, "We believe this innovation will lead to a substantial transformation in cardiac care by maintaining the natural function of blood vessels after treatment."

Dr Ahmed Khashaba highlights the advantages for patients

Dr Ahmed Khashaba emphasised the transformative potential of this innovative technology, pointing to its improved clarity in imaging and rapid biodegradation.  He mentioned that the stents come in a range of sizes, allowing for tailored treatments for various situations. He added, "The 'Fantom Encore' stents not only maintain the natural function of blood vessels but also expand treatment options to address a broader spectrum of conditions." This innovative technology will allow us to deliver exceptional cardiac care to our patients.

An advancement in cardiac care

Second- and third-generation biodegradable stents, like the "Fantom Encore," provide advanced solutions to the challenges faced by earlier technologies. Their enhanced visibility and effectiveness facilitate easier implantation, promote improved vascular healing, and lead to better long-term outcomes, setting the stage for wider adoption of this advanced technology.

The recent accomplishment at Al Qassimi Hospital highlights the Emirates Health Services Corporation's dedication to utilising cutting-edge technological innovations to provide exceptional healthcare solutions.
