Sharjah24: The Child Safety Department (CSD) in Sharjah has unveiled its Winter Campaign, “Their Safety First,” in conjunction with its participation in the Dawahi Festival 13 at Al Qarayen Park 4. Running until 29 February 2025, the campaign seeks to raise awareness among children and families about critical safety measures for outdoor and public activities during the winter season.

With more than 20 diverse initiatives, the campaign focuses on essential topics such as bicycle and scooter safety, camping precautions, and guidelines for winter activities. It also addresses significant risks, including balcony falls, equipping families with the knowledge and practical tools necessary to ensure children enjoy a safe and fulfilling winter experience.

Holistic approach

Building on its presence at Dawahi 13, the campaign’s activities span key locations across Sharjah, including the Desert Police Park, Al Hamriya Children’s Festival 13, major shopping malls, and Mleiha National Park. Additionally, the CSD team will conduct outreach at schools, hospitals, and universities to expand the campaign’s reach and amplify its impact.

A highlight of the campaign is the “Golden Rules for Bicycle Riding” workshop, tailored for children and adolescents. Led by professional trainers, the workshop offers participants hands-on experience with CSD’s comprehensive eight-step guide, interactive Q&A sessions, and live cycling demonstrations. Engaged participants will also have the opportunity to win prizes.

Other initiatives include workshops by Dr. Bana Buzaboon, Mental Health Director at the Kanaf Centre - a CSD initiative; targeted awareness sessions for domestic workers; educational videos on safe versus unsafe cycling practices; and field visits to distribute informational materials on medication safety and accident prevention.

Promoting safety during winter activities

Hanadi Al Yafei, Director-General of the Child Safety Department (CSD), underscored the importance of heightened awareness during the winter season, a time when families in the UAE take full advantage of the cooler weather for outdoor activities. She drew attention to common risks, such as cycling against traffic, navigating roundabouts, or using high-speed roads, and emphasised the critical need for safety adherence and parental supervision.

“Our campaigns are designed to instill a culture of safety, enabling children and families to fully enjoy outdoor activities while prioritising their well-being,” said Al Yafei. “By fostering a sense of collective responsibility among parents, organisations, and the community at large, we are laying the foundation for a safer future where children can thrive.”

Highlighting the significant role outdoor pursuits play in fostering children’s physical and mental health, Al Yafei further emphasised that the campaign does not aim to restrict outdoor activities, but enhance them by ensuring they are safe and beneficial.

Collaboration for greater impact

The campaign is bolstered by strategic partnerships with leading organisations, including the Sharjah Police General Directorate, Sharjah Municipality, Social Services Department, Districts and Villages Affairs Department, Sharjah Civil Defence Authority, and the Prevention and Safety Authority. These collaborations are pivotal in creating a safer environment for families and advancing community-wide safety initiatives.
