Sharjah 24: During 2024, Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority (SEWA) conducted inspections of water tank systems and pumps in 1,615 buildings in both residential and commercial areas to ensure they meet specifications and maintain the health and safety of users.
Through these efforts, the authority aimed to monitor water quality and ensure its safety by inspecting and examining water tank systems and pumps in these buildings, both in residential and commercial areas, to ensure they meet specifications and uphold the health and safety of residents and users.
Engineer Faisal Serkal, Head of the Water Department, emphasised the importance of adhering to several key guidelines to maintain water quality. These include regular maintenance of tank systems, ensuring pump rooms and areas remain clean, and verifying that the surrounding area of the tanks is free from debris and pests. Additionally, ensuring tanks are tightly sealed to prevent contamination and cracks in the tank walls are inspected and repaired, with periodic cleaning carried out by certified companies specialising in water tank maintenance.
He also noted the formation of a dedicated inspection committee responsible for conducting regular inspections to ensure the safety of water systems and pumps in buildings, aiming to prevent contamination and uphold public health. Following these inspections, teams issue notices to property owners highlighting any concerns and providing a list of certified companies for maintenance in line with established standards. Serkal stressed the significance of selecting trusted and certified companies for pump and tank system maintenance and cleaning to ensure they possess the expertise and skills necessary for proper upkeep.
Khalifa bin Tareesh, Chair of the Water Department committee, emphasised that inspecting and maintaining water tank systems and related connections, such as pumps and pipelines, is crucial for ensuring water quality. Neglecting proper maintenance procedures, such as closing shut-off valves, draining tanks, and checking tank walls and ceilings for cracks, can lead to contamination. If sediment accumulates at the bottom of tanks, it must be removed, with thorough cleaning of the tank base and walls following to maintain water quality.
