Sharjah24 –The Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, and her distinguished delegation, recently visited the state-of-the-art BEEAH Headquarters in Sharjah. In the presence of H.E. Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan bin Khalid Al Qasimi, Chairman of Government Relations Department and Member of Executive Council, Ugandan Prime Minister Nabbanja met with a delegation of senior BEEAH executives, led by Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO and Vice Chairman of BEEAH, to exchange insights on sustainable waste management and innovation to drive towards environmental targets.
The Ugandan prime minister and her delegation were briefed on BEEAH’s portfolio of services and went on a comprehensive tour of BEEAH’s facilities, including its Headquarters – which has set standards for smart, sustainable infrastructure – and the nearby integrated waste management complex and Sharjah Waste to Energy plant, which are accelerating circularity and energy transition efforts while driving towards total landfill diversion.
The discussions saw the Ugandan Prime Minister and her delegation share strategic priorities and roadmap for sustainable development in the Republic of Uganda, while Al Huraimel shared insights from BEEAH’s key focus areas. Both delegations also identified opportunities for a potential partnership, including enhancing Uganda’s waste management systems through integrated solutions and technologies.
Ugandan Prime Minister Nabbanja expressed her enthusiasm for the knowledge-sharing exercise, stating “The existing strong UAE – Uganda relationship can be deepened and broaden through knowledge sharing. This would facilitate enhanced cooperation and collaboration, and learning from each other for mutual benefits and economic prosperity of both countries. This could be further facilitated by the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the UAE and Uganda in 2023 on Experience Exchange on Government Development and Modernization.”
H.E. Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan bin Khalid Al Qasimi, Executive Chairman of the Department of Government Relations, Sharjah Executive Council, highlighted the importance of such collaborations. “This visit from Prime Minister Nabbanja reinforces the strong bond built on mutual respect and shared goals between the Emirate of Sharjah and Uganda. Aligning with the UAE national vision, we are invested in forging partnerships that can support sustainable development in African nations and drive wider positive change on the global scale. We look forward to collaborating with the Republic of Uganda and supporting the growth of the Ugandan economy and societies through sustainable initiatives.”
Speaking on behalf of BEEAH, Khaled Al Huraimel added: “We were delighted to host the Ugandan Prime Minister Nabbanja and her delegation in the presence of H.E. Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan bin Khalid Al Qasimi and engage in fruitful dialogue and insight exchange. Having understood some of Uganda’s key priorities, we look forward to continuing discussions and pursuing potential collaborations that would bring BEEAH’s mission of pioneering sustainability and digitalisation to new horizons. BEEAH is excited at the possibility to support the Prime Minister Nabbanja’s efforts in Uganda, particularly in sustainable development and climate change resilience, while contributing to the strategic relationship between the UAE and Uganda and developing commercial diplomacy efforts.”
The visit by the Ugandan Prime Minister follows last month’s trip to BEEAH’s headquarters by H.E. Zaake W. Kibedi, the Ambassador of the Republic of Uganda to the UAE. It also follows Prime Minister Nabbanja’s engagements at the Uganda-UAE Business Forum in Abu Dhabi, where she emphasized Africa’s potential in various sectors, and drew attention to the UAE’s position as one of the leading investors in Uganda, with its FDI now reaching $3 billion across a range of sectors including energy, infrastructure, healthcare, and agriculture.
To date, the UAE has invested over $12 billion in development projects and renewable energy across Africa through partnerships with both governmental and private sectors. The UAE recently announced plans to invest up to $54.5 billion to meet sustainable energy demand over the next six years, aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
During the visit to Sharjah, the Ugandan delegation learned how BEEAH has drastically reduced the need for landfills in the emirate, having achieved the region’s highest landfill diversion rate of over 90%. BEEAH’s ten integrated waste processing and recycling facilities are diverting at least 76% of waste in Sharjah away from landfills. Hard-to-recycle waste is sent to the nearby Sharjah Waste-to-Energy plant, which further raises the landfill diversion rate while producing 30 MW of power and displacing 450,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
