Sharjah24: The artist Mohammed Sadeq Shafei presented an artistic workshop titled "Directly Carving Arabic Letters on a Pen" at the Sharjah Fine Arts College. The workshop was part of the events on the second day of the 11th edition of the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial under the theme of "Numerals," forming a distinctive artistic experience that combines Arabic calligraphy and the art of sculpture.
The workshop was attended by a number of college students who closely learned the intricacies of carving Arabic letters precisely on a pen using special tools.
At the beginning of the workshop, Shafei discussed the relationship between sculpture and Arabic calligraphy, emphasizing the importance and history of Arabic calligraphy, as well as how it can be integrated with the art of sculpture.
He highlighted that this art requires patience and precision, considering it a wonderful way to learn a new skill and enhance communication between art and Arab culture. He mentioned that this type of art can vary between ordinary letter writing or designing complex shapes with distinct engravings and decorations.
Shafei then proceeded to introduce the students to the tools used in letter carving such as wooden pencils, fine knives, and small chisels, practically explaining how to handle and use the tools safely, apply the appropriate movements to carve the letters accurately and beautifully.
Moreover, Shafei provided tips on how to improve their carving skills, create special artistic designs, and allowed the participants to apply what they had learned by carving their own letters on the pen.
