Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has carried out an integrated project to upgrade a package of vital roads in the Al Batayeh industrial and commercial zones, with a total length of approximately 7.4 kilometres.

The project falls within the Authority’s ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure in key areas, and to establish an integrated urban and investment-friendly environment that meets current demands and anticipates future needs.

The new development is located in Al Batayeh on both sides of the Al Batayeh–Al Fayah Road, with the commercial zone to the east of the road and the industrial zone to the west. This makes the project a key link not only between the two areas, but also with the main road, thereby facilitating access and exit, and allowing for smoother traffic flow of both vehicles and lorries.

Sustainable Development

His Excellency Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA), stressed that road development projects are given top priority, especially in vital areas with increasing density and diverse activities. He noted that the project embodies the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and his continuous commitment to the sustainable development of infrastructure across the Emirate, and to providing top-tier services to investors and all road users.

He explained that, throughout the execution of the project, the Authority ensured that all elements necessary for road efficiency and sustainability were incorporated. The development includes a new access point from the Al Batayeh–Al Fayah Road to provide safe and direct entry to the industrial zone, along with precisely engineered acceleration and deceleration lanes tailored to match the speed limits of the main road. The project primarily aims to strengthen the internal connectivity between the industrial and commercial zones, and to improve traffic flexibility, while also supporting the area’s economic development by offering a modern road network built to the highest recognised engineering standards, and aligned with expected urban growth and the expansion of commercial and industrial activities in the coming years.

Single and Dual Carriageways

His Excellency Engineer Suleiman Abdulrahman Al Hajri, Director of the Roads Affairs Department at the Authority, stated that the project works included the construction of an internal road network in the industrial zone spanning 5,820 metres, all of which are single-direction roads, carefully designed to enhance traffic flow and accommodate the regular movement of lorries and heavy vehicles in the area.

As for the commercial zone, the works covered 720 metres of single-direction roads, in addition to 900 metres of dual carriageways, which were connected to a central roundabout designed specifically to manage traffic and ease movement between key routes.

The dual carriageway in the commercial zone features a cross-section with two lanes, each 7.3 metres wide, in both directions, along with a central median of 4.6 metres, contributing to the highest levels of road safety for users, while taking into account future development needs.

Quality Services

The project also included a set of high-quality service features, such as 2.5-metre-wide road shoulders, and a rainwater drainage system installed in low-lying areas using isolated gravel drains that ensure smooth water flow and prevent pooling during the rainy season. This enhances both the functionality and environmental sustainability of the roads.

In addition, bases for street lighting were installed, along with associated civil works to enable the relevant authorities to provide lighting, thereby improving safety for vehicles and pedestrians and reducing night-time accidents.

He noted that the project is set to mark a qualitative leap for the area by supporting the investment climate, easing logistics movement, and encouraging further economic activity, while also meeting the needs of visitors and residents in a modern environment that offers a high quality of life and integrated infrastructure.
