Sharjah 24: Al Qassimi Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Sharjah, affiliated with the Emirates Health Services Corporation, has achieved a pioneering achievement at the state level in treating uterine fibroids using a new technology without the need for surgery.
The hospital announced its success in using this technique to treat 8 cases suffering from health problems due to the presence of fibers on the uterus and the accompanying bleeding and pain.

Dr. Mona Khalfan Sabt, Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at the hospital, said that the uterine fibroids treatment unit uses a new technology that is one of the modern techniques recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to treat soft tissue tumors, which has proven effective and has a high degree of safety for treating women who suffer from uterine fibroids without the need to undergo surgery to remove them. It is a radio radiation technique for treating soft tissue tumors such as uterine tumors and fibroids. Recent studies have proven the effectiveness and safety of this modern technology in treating tumors of various organs such as the liver, kidneys, adrenal gland, thyroid, breast, bones, and uterus.

She added that ablation of uterine fibroids using radiofrequency is a form of thermal ablation that leads, over time, to complete shrinkage of the size of the fibers without the need for surgery or exposure to serious side effects, pointing out that this medical procedure is characterised by its effectiveness, safety, and ability to treat uterine fibroids while preserving the health and safety of the uterus, as women who undergo this procedure can leave the hospital on the same day, while they can return to their normal activity within about 5 days.

Dr. Mona Kashwani, a specialist in gynecology and robotic surgery at the hospital, explained that uterine fibroids are benign and recurrent tumors that affect the uterine muscle. They are very common, as 30% of women suffer from them, and they cause various symptoms such as bleeding, pain, fertility problems, and recurrent miscarriage.

She noted that uterine fibroids may affect in advanced stages, it affects vital organs such as the urinary system and kidneys, in addition to causing many complications during pregnancy, so it is recommended to diagnose and treat it in a timely manner.

The adoption of modern radio radiation technology comes within the framework of the hospital administration’s keenness to provide the best types of medical care to its patients, as it is the only technology that does not require surgical intervention. The hospital added this unique technology to a list of pre-existing procedures that require surgical intervention to treat uterine fibroids, which include: Open surgery and resection by robot and technology.

This achievement is the result of the integrated efforts of the hospital’s work team in its various departments, as it reflects the great support provided by the Emirates Health Services Corporation to its facilities by providing modern, high-quality medical technologies.
