Sharjah24: The medical team at Al Qasimi Women and Children Hospital, affiliated with Emirates Health Services (EHS), succeeded in saving the life of an Emirati child who was transferred to the hospital due to severe bloody vomiting, after bronchoscopy data revealed that the child was suffering from Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs).
The child was admitted to the hospital suffering from severe bloody vomiting. Immediate examinations of the digestive system were performed, which did not reveal any bleeding in the digestive system, and bleeding in the upper respiratory tract was ruled out.

The medical team continued to conduct careful examinations of the bronchial tubes through an endoscopy, which revealed the presence of a large clot in the airway of the lung, which necessitated its immediate removal. Doctors were surprised by the presence of severe pulmonary bleeding in the lower part of the right lung, which may be caused by the presence of a local vascular malformation.

After detecting the bleeding, the medical team decided to perform a diagnostic catheterisation, which confirmed the presence of a rare vascular malformation “arterial connection to the lung,” which necessitated the need for rapid intervention and joint cooperation between pulmonologists and cardiologists, as the doctors were able to close the artery feeding the bleeding through the catheter and work to reduce the recurrence of bleeding.

Dr. Safia Saif Al Khaja, Director of Al Qasimi Women and Children Hospital, praised the efforts of the hospital team, and the importance of fruitful cooperation between the different medical teams, which led to the discovery of this rare condition, to control the bleeding, and provide the necessary treatment after reaching the most accurate diagnosis. Regarding the causes of bleeding, this is in line with EHS keenness to provide integrated healthcare in all health facilities, in accordance with the best standards of quality, excellence and professionalism, and to provide continuous training for the medical staff, and enhance their capabilities to perform rare surgical operations that require experience, knowledge and high efficiency.

Dr. Nader Francis, Pediatric Lung Diseases Consultant at the hospital, explained that the child’s condition is one of the rare cases that was diagnosed quickly and accurately and that the optimal medical procedure was taken to save the child’s life. The Child was able to leave the hospital fully recovered after 48 hours. Dr. Nader Francis praised the combined efforts of medical teams in all specialties to provide optimal health care to patients, and the high-quality medical capabilities provided by EHS in all medical facilities.
