In his speech, the Director of the University of Sharjah stressed the importance of insight and sound thinking to ensure the success of business and achieve goals for the benefit of society, saying: “It is a matter of pride for us, academics and administrators, to work and strive at the University of Sharjah, under the guidance of a decree from His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, Founder of the University, and under the continuous patronage of Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, President of the University.
Al Nuaimi pointed out in his speech that sustainable development, the topic of which the conference addresses, is one of the priorities of the University of Sharjah in all scientific and academic fields, including teaching, research, awareness, and discussion through international conferences.
The Director of the University of Sharjah reviewed the achievements made by the university in the field of sustainability over the previous years, and the permanent directives of His Highness the President of the University of Sharjah to achieve sustainable development goals in all fields, saying: “The University of Sharjah achieved first place in international classification systems over seven consecutive years (2017-2023). It received the gold category in 2022, and it is the first university in the Arab world in the American classification system (STARS). This is not surprising for a university led by Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, who issued directives to strive seriously to mitigate climate change and the impact of global warming, treat environmental problems, support sustainability projects by singling them out with special programmes and integrating their vocabulary into academic courses and scientific research. For this work to be fruitful and disciplined by academic rules, a sustainability office was established at the university in 2017, and one of its most prominent purposes was to measure sustainability performance and motivate colleges to serve their goals in study and research.”
Dr. Shawki Allam, Grand Mufti of Egypt, gave a speech in which he praised the conference and the topics it addresses in the issue of contemporary “ijtihad” in various areas of life, which relate to the higher purposes of Islamic law and achieving the highest interest of countries and peoples.
For his part, Dr. Omar Al Darai, Chairman of the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (GAIAE), addressed, in his speech, the efforts of the United Arab Emirates in the field of sustainability, based on the belief of its wise leadership in the importance of sustainable development in all fields, pointing out that determination, will and leadership are conditions for achieving success in every field.
Dr. Al Darai concluded his speech emphasising the importance of the role of universities in renewing thought curricula and directing Sharia studies, the duty of academic institutions to contribute to the preparation and discussion of everything related to intellectual and jurisprudential diligence, in addition to openness to science and knowledge through values and principles and consideration of human commonalities and a comprehensive cosmic view of times and civilisations in order to facilitate diligence.
The Chairman of Sharjah Ruler's Office and the conference attendees watched a visual presentation that covered the academic programmes offered by the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies, and the intellectual projects it organises to discuss legal and jurisprudential topics. At the end of the opening of the conference, Sheikh Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi honored the speakers and sponsors of the conference.
The conference aims to control the types, paths and mechanisms of jurisprudential jurisprudence, consolidate the legitimacy of sustainable development through juridical texts and purposes, demonstrate the impact of contemporary scholars in keeping pace with the controversial issues in jurisprudence of their era and serve the field of sustainable development, strengthen the link between the jurisprudence of text and the jurisprudence of reality, and enable future generations to meet their needs through rationalization of consumption and clarifying the impact of contemporary jurisprudence in controlling the standards of rationalisation and its protocols and procedures.
