Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) organised the first championship among workers of Sharjah facilities at the Al Thiqah Club for Handicapped under the slogan “Workers’ Peak Hour Championship, in which 5 teams of workers from different departments and destinations in the Emirate of Sharjah competed.
The initiative included a lecture to educate workers and develop their awareness of behaviours and methods for rationalising energy and water consumption, and an array of sports competitions and rewards and prizes for the contestants, with the aim of improving the concept of the Peak Hour and the optimal use of resources to become a societal culture.
Rashid Al Marzouqi, Director of the Corporate Communications Department at SEWA, explained that the tournament comes as one of the important programmes prepared by the Authority within a specific strategy to promote the Peak Hour initiative launched by the Authority in implementation of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, which reflects the vision of His Highness in spreading the culture of energy conservation and rationalising its use in society with civilised and advanced behaviour.
He stressed that this labour championship aims to develop awareness among workers of the importance of energy and water and methods of optimal use of it, and to enhance collective action to confront the phenomenon of global warming by rationalising energy consumption and using natural resources in a more conscious manner, instilling a spirit of initiative, and spreading awareness among members of society about the necessity of enhancing their effective role in raising efficiency of their use of electricity and reducing the waste of resources, thus contributing to sustainable development.
He praised the cooperation of the entities participating in the tournament and thanked those who contributed to the success of the tournament by offering a number of gifts and prizes, namely the Sharjah Co-op, Carmen Perfumes, and Abeer Alsabah Opticals, stressing that the Authority is keen to activate cooperation with various government agencies and private companies.
Al Marzouqi explained that the Authority seeks to organise awareness campaigns and support activities and events that enhance interaction with various sectors so that they can be effective elements in building a better future for our future generations, and is keen to prepare specialised programmes that suit every segment of society.
He stressed that the goal of these initiatives and events is to establish a culture of rational consumption among all segments of society, and to advance the concept of rationalising resource consumption to become a societal culture and daily behaviour by activating the role of customers in reducing electricity and water consumption, to contribute to preserving our precious natural resources to support the process of sustainable development in the emirate of Sharjah, and the wider United Arab Emirates.
Al Marzouqi added that the initiatives launched by the Authority demonstrated the extent to which all members of society can contribute to supporting efforts aimed at reducing the phenomena of climate change and global warming by adopting positive behaviours at work and at home, ensuring the rationalisation of consumption of natural resources of energy and water and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Teams from the Conservation Department of the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority, the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, the Workers’ Housing Division of the Sharjah Municipality, the Sharjah Co-op, and the Enjazat Services, participated in the tournament.
At the conclusion of the tournament, the Authority honoured the winning teams, participants and sponsors.
