Al Fuhais, Al Thawra one step away from AWST basketball finals

Sharjah 24: Jordan’s Al Fuhais alongside Syria’s Al Thawra have each secured their fourth consecutive victory, on Tuesday, positioning them just one step away from a coveted spot in the finals of the 7th edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST 2024) basketball championship.
The reigning champions, Al Fuhais, showcased their prowess against the Bahraini Al-Ahli team with a 109-45 score at the final whistle registering biggest lead during a match in the tournament with 67 points.

In turn, Al Thawra players had no difficulty in establishing their dominance over the course of the two halves of the match against Iraq's Ghaz Al-Shamal SC, which was evident Syrians' success in securing an absolute advantage in the match which ended 77-58.

Kuwait’s Al Fatat secured their first win on Tuesday after an intense game against Sharjah Women Club. The game began with Sharjah team taking an early lead, ending the first quarter ahead by three points at 16-13. However, Al Fatat, turned the tables by the half, securing an 11-point lead with a score of 36 to 25. The tension heightened in the third quarter as Sharjah players fought back, regaining momentum and closing the gap to a mere two points, with the quarter ending at 46-44. This neck-and-neck battle underscored the teams' competitiveness and resolve, but ultimately, Al Fatat's consistent effort secured the win at the final whistle with a score of 74 to 67.

At the end of the round, Al Thawra and Al-Fuhais bolstered their partnership at the top of the overall standings, achieving a perfect record and maintaining an unbeaten streak, each with eight points. They lead by three points over the Bahrain’s Al Ahli, which is in third place. Kuwait’s Al Fatat, Saudi Arabia’s Capital Club and Iraq’s Ghaz Al-Shamal SC are sharing fourth place, each with four points, while the Sharjah Women's Sports Club at the bottom of the list with three points.

Thursday’s schedule
Basketball teams will rest on Wednesday, before resuming the preliminary round on Thursday, with three matches scheduled for the sixth and penultimate round. The matches will commence at 11 AM with the Syria’s Al Thawra facing Jordan’s Al Fuheis, followed at 1 PM by a match between the Kuwait’s Al Fatat and Bahrain’s Al-Ahli, and concluding the round at 3 PM with a match between the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club and the Saudi Capital Club.
