Sharjah24: The Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah (EPAA) announced the winners of the 11th edition of the Sharjah Sustainability Award, in its two categories, green schools and universities, in a large and distinguished ceremony held at the Al Qasimia University Theatre.
The ceremony honoured many in the presence of Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority.
114 winners from schools and universities
Since the launch of the award in September last year, the number of participants in the category of green schools has reached 196 public and private schools from various Emirates of the UAE, and the number of participants in the category of universities has reached 311 students, university students, and academic supervisors from the academic staff in 11 universities. The total number of winners in the award ‘Projects in the Schools and Universities’ category is 114 winners.
They achieved success in sustainable environment projects, projects in artificial intelligence, scientific research, and sustainable projects on future energy and emissions, sustainability projects in protecting human health and the environment and protecting natural environmental resources, in addition to projects to reduce the consumption of electric energy and water, innovation projects, and environmental awareness films and stories.
Promoting the principle of sustainable study environments within the environmental specifications applied globally
Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi said, "We congratulate the winners of the 11th edition of the Sharjah Sustainability Award, and we find it appropriate to emphasize that the Sharjah Sustainability Award aims to promote the concept of a sustainable green environment, based on the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, on the importance of protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity in the Emirates. The importance of launching the award lies in the involvement and initiative of all school and university students, in addition to the administrative and teaching bodies of the participating schools, in a way that contributes to developing their perceptions of independent projects, ideas and activities, to promote the principle of sustainable study environments within the environmental specifications globally.
Honouring the partners and the jury
The ceremony witnessed the honouring of the cooperating institutions in supporting and facilitating the dissemination of the award, as they are partners in success and excellence. Emirates Schools Establishment )ESE(, Sharjah Private Education Authority, Sharjah Electricity, Water, Gas Authority (SEWA), Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, University of Sharjah, and the American University in Sharjah, Skyline University College, Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, Al Qasimia University, University of Sharjah, were honoured. Additionally, Arabic Language Protection Association and Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park, Sharjah Youth, Sajaya young ladies of Sharjah, and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority in Dubai, were recognised.

In the distinguished ceremony, the winning schools, students and teachers were honored in the areas of the green schools category. In the field of rationalizing electric energy and water, Baaya School for Basic and Secondary Education was honored for winning first place in the field of rationalizing electric energy and water, Bidaa Al-Mutawa Joint School was also honored for winning the center second and honoring Al-Ghazali School (second cycle), which won third place.
In the field of a sustainable environmental project, the insulating paint project with air technology, presented by the Dubai National School team in Al Barsha, won first place. While the Tornado Garage device project, submitted by the student team of Al-Khalil Bin Ahmed Secondary Education School in Sharjah, won second place. The third place went to the Blue Signal Project, presented by Jumana Bint Abi Talib School for Basic Education (Second Cycle).
As for the best project in artificial intelligence, the smart rainwater drainage project won first place, submitted by Mirbah School for Girls in Abu Dhabi. While the smart waste classifier project presented by the American Private School in Kalba won second place. The artificial intelligence basket project won third place, presented by the Indian International School in Sharjah.
In the environmental innovative field, first place was won by the 3D printing project in a sustainable manner, by the Al-Mahmoud School for Secondary Education for Boys in Sharjah. While the second place was awarded to the waste treatment system project using Internet of Things technology, by the Applied Technology High School in Sharjah.
In the field of creative writing for the short story in the Arabic language, the first place went to the story of Bouh Sharjah, written by the student Aisha Khaled Youssef Al-Mughni, from Al-Hijrah School, second cycle for girls in Sharjah, under the supervision of teacher Alia Abdullah Al-Zaabi. The second place went to the story “The Mangrove Tree Talked to Me,” written by the student Shahd Ali Massad Saleh, from Al-Zawraa School-1 for Basic Education in Ajman.
In the field of creative writing for the short story in English, the first place went to the story “The Mangrove Scout”, written by the student Shamma Al Dhaheri from the Emirati American School in Sharjah, under the supervision of the teacher, Elham Al Hafez. While second place for the field of English language story was won by a story written by the student Fatima Al-Jawy, “Calling out to be Heard: your Fellow Mangrove” from Dubai National School, Al-Barsha branch.
In the field of producing a short environmental film, the film “Small Animals is a Great Responsibility” won first place, produced by the student team of the National School (Second Episode). While the second place was won by the movie Who is Tolin? Produced by Al Mataf Primary School for Girls in Ras Al Khaimah.
In the field of green schools, the award was won by the My Environment, My Responsibility project, presented by the Al Amal School for the Deaf team in Sharjah.
University category winners
In the field of sustainable design and construction, the Zawra Sustainable Museum project won first place, submitted by the Ajman University student team. While the second place was awarded to the “Sustainable Manufacturing of Functional Parts Using Manufacturing, Addition of Materials and Metal Casting” project, presented by a team of the University of Sharjah students.
In the field of scientific research in sustainability for bachelor's degree students, first place was won by research on flexible photovoltaic solar energy applications in floating solar panels, submitted by a team of the University of Sharjah. While winning second place for scientific research for undergraduate students, a research on “an innovative method to achieve an effective development of the thermal performance of citizens’ homes through the application of a hybrid system for treating the external walls”, the team of students of the UAE University in Al Ain.
As for the field of scientific research in sustainability submitted by postgraduate students, the first place was won by the research project “Design and Evaluation of Water Treatment Technologies for the Removal of Inorganic Components and Toxic Heavy Metals from Wastewater”, by the University of Sharjah. While he won second in a research project on “Improving the Performance of the Biological Waste Reactor by Recycling the Treated Leachate” by the University of Sharjah. In the field of future energy and emissions, the project "Bio-photovoltaic production of green hydrogen" was won by the University of Sharjah female team. While second place was awarded to the project "Designing and manufacturing a device that works on solar energy to analyse water to reduce fuel consumption in vehicles that run on natural gas", for a team of students at the American University of Sharjah.
In the field of preserving and protecting natural environment resources, the project to develop cellulose compound extracted from recycling paper waste to capture carbon dioxide won first place, by Khalifa University. While the second place went to the experimental test project and optimization of camel dung as potential raw materials for aerobic composting, by the University of Sharjah.
In the field of artificial intelligence applications in sustainability, the award was won by a control unit project using artificial intelligence methods for high-efficiency solar energy applications, by UAE University.
In the field of sustainability in protecting human health and the environment, first place was won by the iron and carbon nanocomposite project to mitigate heavy metal pollution in complex water environments, by the University of Sharjah, while second place was won by the smart machine project for drug disposal, by the Ajman University female students team.
"Well-deserved honors were awarded to the winners in the distinguished ceremony, where winning schools, students, and teachers were recognized in the Green Schools category. In the field of rationalizing electric energy and water consumption, the Baaya School for Basic and Secondary Education was lauded for winning first place.
