Abdul Hamid Al Yasi, Director of the Youth Welfare Department at Sharjah Youth, confirmed that the launch of the plastic boat competition at Al Rafisah Dam in Khorfakkan is in line with the UAE's interest in the Year of Sustainability, and aims to educate the participants on the importance of sustainability through the recycling of plastic materials to limit their use.
He explained that more than 30,000 canisters were collected out of which 26 boats were built.
Speaking exclusively to "Sharjah 24", Al Yasi said, "We have felt the participants’ responsibility towards sustainability which was embodied in helping to collect plastic containers."
He added that the plastic boat manufacturing programme will be organised annually in different regions, and Al Rafisah Dam was chosen this year to emphasise the importance of preserving water that helps in agriculture and sustainability.
