Sharjah24: In celebration of the World, Space Week themed “Sustainability and Space,” the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology (SAASST) of the University of Sharjah (UoS) organized various scientific activities to shed light on astronomy, space sciences, and the history of human space exploration.
The activities included several astro-space experiments, a space treasure hunt competition, a tour around the space exhibitions for school students and visitors. In addition, observation of the Moon and other planets was conducted by the Sharjah Optical Observatory (SOO) at SAASST. Furthermore, virtual space shows such as the Secrets of our Planet, Traveling to Mars, Hunting Meteorites, and Phantom of the Universe were also presented. Moreover, SAASST’s Planetarium and Space Exhibition Department conducted various scientific workshops for students at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization and the Sharjah Science Museum. In addition to a lecture on “James Webb Space Telescope”, given at the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Ajman.
On this occasion, Prof. Ilias Fernini, Deputy General Director for Research and Scientific Projects, SAASST, highlighted the Academy’s keenness to raise the level of scientific research and keep pace with the future labor market needs, aiming to achieve excellence and leadership in the Field of Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology.
Prof. Mashhoor Al Wardat, Professor at the Department of Applied Physics and Astronomy, stated that it was a great opportunity for interested people to join the live optical observations and to use the telescopes. He emphasized that the SOO is distinguished by its scientific and technological progress in astronomical observations. Its devices are unique in that they are equipped with the best and most modern telescopes used for astronomical imaging of astronomical objects and follow-up of celestial events. He also pointed out that this celebration reflects SAASST's role in providing various activities to the public, students, and amateur to supports astronomical knowledge and awareness and create a live interactive scientific experience.
For his part, Mr. Marwan Shwaiki, Deputy General Director for Planetarium and Space Exhibition, pointed out that SAASST's participation in these events plays an important role in providing students and the general public with the latest knowledge in this field of sciences. Moreover, this has become a key focus in business, the country, and the world. In addition, it reflects the vision of the Academy and the UoS in spreading astronomy and space sciences in conjunction with all international Astronomy events, especially this World Space Week, which comes early in October every year.
