Mom is Old
Written by Afraa Hatahit and illustrated by Anna Forlati, this story centres around young Rania, who is upset because her mother – unlike her friends’ mothers – does not look young. This occupies her mind so much that she can neither sleep nor eat. When Rania discloses her thoughts to her mother, the latter explains that looks and age are not important; it is her love for her that matters. The story teaches children to value love over beauty or age.
Mom is a Suitcase
When Mom says: ‘Each of us is a suitcase carrying what’s enough inside’, the child wonders: ‘What did my mom mean? And how do I become a suitcase?’ This story, written by Sahar Naja Mahfouz and illustrated by Katya Longhi, encourages children to become self-sufficient and helps them develop self-esteem.
Mimi and Her Busy Mom
Fatima Sharafeddine’s story about young Mimi, who is upset about her mother’s busy schedule as a paediatrician, will resonate with many young readers. In the story, illustrated by Rasha Mounib Al Hakim, the young girl wants her mother to stop working and spend more time with her. Mimi’s mother decides to take a day off and to make it a special day, takes her daughter to the clinic where she works and shows her around. Mimi discovers the importance of her mother’s job and wishes to become like her when she grows up. The story explores how, by delicately handling the situation, Mimi’s mother addressed a common concern that most young children face.
Someday
Narrated in the form of a descriptive and rhyming monologue, a young girl describes the love she has for her mother, who is ill and in hospital. She describes how she will care for her, dreams of the good times they will spend together, the beautiful memories they will create and the happiness it will bring them. This story of the intensity of love between a daughter and her mother is penned by Shaikha Al Zeyara and illustrated by Francesca Dafne Vignaga.
My Little Treasure
Obada Takla’s story is of a little boy, Amer, who loves to pick out beautiful objects to add to his growing collection of secret treasures. One day, he asks his mother is she has a treasure, and when she says yes, he asks to see it. To his surprise, his mother points to his reflection in the mirror and says, “You are my treasure”. This story, illustrated by Betania Zacarias, teaches kids to appreciate beauty in everything, and that the treasures in one’s life are the people we love.
How Much Do You Love Me?
