Sharjah 24: The participants in the virtual international conference “Quality of Life for People with Severe and Multiple Disabilities” organised by Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) on March 8 and 9, in cooperation with the Hashemite University of Jordan came up with a set of recommendations.
The recommendations began with a quote from the speech of Her Excellency Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Director General of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS), in which she confirmed that the conference represents a turning point in the Arab region and the world at large in serving people with severe and multiple disabilities.
Among the most important recommendations of the conference, the design and development of standards and tools to assess the quality of educational programmes for students with severe and multiple disabilities from early childhood to youth. The use of appropriate assessment methods, and evidence-based teaching strategies within the transdisciplinary team. The provision of health, rehabilitation and social services for people with severe and multiple disabilities.
The recommendations also included the creation of alternative services and solutions in times of crisis, and attention to providing training, counseling and psychological programmes for the family to improve the quality of life for people with severe and multiple disabilities in different age stages.
In addition to the emphasis on the role of civil society institutions in developing professional practices and providing support to families with innovative methods and programmes, expanding the use and development of supportive technologies through research studies, training specialists, families and people with severe and multiple disabilities to use them.
The conference witnessed many discussions and events that shed light on ways to serve disabled people, which were attended by many experts and top officials who exchanged and shared their ideas and expertise on the subject matter.
