Sharjah 24: International academics, professionals, and physicians came together on March 8 and 9 of 2022 to start the virtual conference, "Quality of Life for People with Severe and Multiple Disabilities," hosted by Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services in collaboration with the Hashemite University in Jordan.
Since its inception in 1979, Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) has worked tirelessly to develop quality services and programmes that are consolidated with the goal of integrating and advocating for persons with disabilities based on its vision, mission under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Director General of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, emphasised the importance of the conference in exchanging information and knowledge and casting light on a class that has long been hidden, not because of neglect, but because of a lack of knowledge and shortcomings in work. As a result of their inability to communicate their needs and rights in a traditional manner, this minority has been largely excluded out of the services available to others and has been deprived of even the most fundamental rights.
In a speech, she expressed her delight at the honouring of Dr. Moussa Charafeddine, President of the Friends of the Disabled Association, who has worked tirelessly to promote the rights of people with disabilities in the region.
In closing her remarks, she thanked all the speakers and "The Hashemite University," the SCHS’s partner in arranging the conference, for everything they had done and contributed to the success of the event. She also noted that person with severe and multiple disabilities in our Arab area and the rest of the globe are seeing a major shift in their futures.
Hashemite University President, Fawaz Al Abd Al Haq Al Zaboon emphasised the fact that this international scientific gathering is a realisation of the visions and directions set forth by the wise leadership in Jordan and the UAE, as well as a reinforcement of their strategic alliance.
Hashemite University aims to provide an accessible and welcoming atmosphere for students with disabilities by offering high-quality educational programmes. A few of the university's greatest successes in this area include:Queen Rania College for Childhood, the only Middle Eastern college specialising in childhood issues, the first masters programme in special educational for childhood, the first inclusionary kindergarten on the university campus, a seat for students with disabilities in the student council elections, and designing modern buildings at the university to be friendly to people with disabilities.
According to Dr. Al Zaboon, the conference serves as a platform for a new approach to cooperative work that creates quality success chances between the university and Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services.
Seoul National University professor, who expressed his joy at working with the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services years ago through the supporting applications competition, has a significant participation in the conference. He expressed his gratitude and admiration to Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi and all the SCHS's workers
When Mona Karam, Director of the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) Branch in Khorfakkan introduced the conference, she highlighted its three key focuses: “Rehabilitation and education”, “Therapeutic health", and “The legal rights of those with disabilities”.
Academic and specialists from Arab, European, and US countries presented and debated a wide range of topics around the three main focuses.
