Engineer Kholoud Al Naboodah, Director of the Water Quality Department, confirmed that buildings water tanks, pumps and pipes are an important part that affects the water quality if not taken care of. Al Naboodah added that open tanks can attract dust, insects and pollutants, as it became clear from the campaigns that the absence of a tight cover for the tank is the most common reason water contamination.
Al Naboodah stressed the importance of periodic cleaning of tanks, closing the valve leading to the network and inspecting the walls and ceiling to ensure that they have no cracks, removing any residues and washing the bottom and walls.
Engineer Kholoud Al Naboodah explained that SEWA focused, during the campaign, on educating the public by developing awareness programmes on the importance of maintaining the quality of drinking water inside the tanks by cleaning the tanks periodically every six months to ensure the safety of potable water.
The Director of the Water Quality Department pointed the need to adhere to a number of important controls for building water tanks, such as ensuring that the area surrounding the tank is clean and away from unpleasant odours, smoke, dust and pollutants, and that it is completely isolated to prevent water leakage from the tank or mixing tank water with other external sources, as well as thermal insulation to maintain the temperature.
Engineer Kholoud Al Naboodah concluded that the SEWA technical teams carry out periodic inspection tours to ensure the cleanliness and safety of water tanks and water supply in buildings, and landlords commitment to sterilise tanks in accordance with the required health standards.
