Sharjah24: Young artists had the opportunity to hone their creative skills in animated cartoon sketching and digital illustration on the fourth day of the 8th edition of the Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF 2021).
Two action-oriented workshops were offered by the Sharjah Education Council on SIFF’s virtual Kids Studio platform yesterday, October 13.

The ‘Animated Cartoon Sketching GIF’ workshop introduced children to the fascinating world of animated cartoon, familiarising them with various tools to create their favorite cartoon characters as well as apps. Trainer Maria Al Rashed took the participants through the paces of using the Procreate app, revealing its features, tools, and functions and how to utilise them to design inspirational figures as well as convert them into moving images.

The trainer showed the children how to sketch, using the app’s ‘brushes’ to paint, erase, and mix colours. She stressed on the importance of using the imagination to create attractive cartoon characters.

The trainer concluded the workshop with tips about how to portray feelings such as fear, sadness, or happiness to create emotive and realistic animations.

Artist Fatima Al Hammadi began the workshop titled ‘Digital Illustration’ with an introduction to digital art - creating drawings on computers and tablets. She coached the beginners on how to ‘draw’ using the Procreate app or Adobe Illustrator which could be used as an alternative.

The aspiring artists learnt how to use Procreate’s tools to draw portraits as well as choose colours and tones to create realistic digital art. Through step-by-step instructions from the trainer, they learnt to transform photographs to digital paintings. Al Hammadi shared some of her digital artworks, which included the SIFF logo.

Organised by FUNN - Sharjah Media Arts for Youth and Children, SIFF 2021 hosted 80 films from 38 countries, including 6 world premieres, 35 Middle East and 3 GCC premieres, and four films being shown for the first time in the UAE. The festival will conclude on Friday, 15 October.

The SIFF 2021 awards will be announced at the closing ceremony tomorrow, October 15.
